A Soldier’s Story: Vietnam
Synopsis: The Vietnam War was the longest military conflict in United States history. It was ordinary men who fought and bled in the unforgiving jungle. This is the story of veteran Marine, Don Roberts. One of many who sacrificed so much for country, duty and freedom. This is A Soldier’s Story.
Production Notes: This was my second film school project which allowed me to try the documentary format. What made this project especially personal and special, was that the veteran that this film is about, Don, is the father of our music composer, David Roberts. It was great to try exploring documentary filmmaking while creating a record of some of Don’s experiences while serving as a Marine in Vietnam.
It was another small crew, just me, Don, someone on camera and another on lights. Don was a bit nervous at first, being the center of attention wasn’t typical for him but he opened up and captivated us as he relayed his stories. There are quite a few more stories that were filmed that day but I had to make some cuts for time but we made sure to have an uncut version around. David did a really good job with the music and did an excellent version of the “Marines’ Hymn”.
